fishing in Mykonos

As fishing around Leros and other small islands between Leros, Kalymnos and Lipsi becomes more and more unproductive, due to the over fishing of the waters around these islands in the last fifty years, the fishermen of Leros should probably try their luck in other places.  Alternative fishing places may seem a little bit far from their home island and it would be worth them staying for a couple of months in islands such as Mykonos, Paros and Naxos which could be very good places. 

Fishing around Mykonos can be very profitable, especially during the summer months when the restaurants and the hotels can ay to a fortune for a kilo of first class fish like red mullet (barbounia) or lobsters. The problem with Mykonos is the summer winds (Meltemia) that could almost make fishing there impossible, although there are still a lot of fish to be caught on the north side of the island still, on the straights between Tinos and Mykonos.  A lot of fish are ideal for nets around the small bays south of Rinia between Delos and Rinia on the west of Mykonos.  The south of the island of Mykonos is well protected from the winds, so line fishing is probably very productive.  As Paros is very close, a fishing boat can stay in the port of Mykonos where many of the northern parts of Paros are also easily reached within a couple of hours.  The market of Paros is also very profitable because both islands, with the development of tourism, now do not have many locals who chose to work as fishermen.

Radio Leros

 I write this article about Leros radio because the official website is in Greek so its good to know a few things about the Radio station of Leros that is doing a very good job the last 20 years espesially thanks to Yannis Velis.

The Radio Leros, the first municipal Radio on the Aegean launched on May 1988 at a time when the National programes could only be heared from the Rhodes radio station

In this period, the radio Leros fills a major gap in the FM band, daring unreservedly and strongly reluctant to give its presence in the Herz waves the aspirations of a group of mainly teachers that for many years offer their services from covering the sectors of information, entertainment and culture.

This team immediately embraced by the municipality of Leros and with the decision of the Municipal Council in May 1988 approved and placed  this particular activity of Radio Leros as a part of the newly created Municipal Cultural Center of Leros during the service of Mayor Yiannis Antartis operating by the teacher Costas Velis.

On 27 1989, the General Secretariat of Press and Information approved the licence to establish and operate the RADIO LEROS under the Presidential Decree 25/1988, signed by the then Minister of State  with the name  R.L. F.M S.T transmiting to 102.5 of the band FM.

The RADIO LEROS places particular importance in the field of entertainment and education through a series of musical and training programes extended throughout history, folklore and culture of our region as well as the environment, literature and the arts .

Ferries Piraeus Santorini Mykonos Leros and tourist development

It looks like a dream a ferry connection of Leros with the islands of Santorini and Mykonos from Piraeus. The island will burst of backpacking tourists like the good old days back in the 70’s when the M/V MIMIKA use to come to Lakki from Mykonos with hundreds of backpackers and rooms studios and hotels use to see the first tourism coming to Leros from the begining of April and not as today that we have the first tourists by the end of June (exept the usual KAPI groups of SKYBI) . Unfortunatelly the tourist season is too short for Leros, too many hotels and accomodation for a hanful of tourists unlike the huge tourist industry of Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes or Kos with millions of websites advertising hotels in Mykonos or Rhodes accommodation, apartments in Paros or Santorini accommodation. One of the main reasons is the Ferry connections and the airport of course. If the money that have been spend on useless financial projects (not to mention them here, all Leros knows about them) have been spend wiselly on investing probably with the cooperation of Kalymnos and Lipsi and variuous investors from the Dodecanese in effort to buy a Ferry and create an indipendent Ferry company, things good have been better not only for Leros but for the islands of Kalymnos and Lipsi as well. What we need is ferries, Santorini ferries , Mykonos ferries and Paros Ferries. Well bluestar ferries have connection with Paros and Syros but still the route is not ideal for island hopping. As about Agoudimos ferries that’s another story. The other main subject is the development of a largest airport but this is something very difficult due to the tourist competition of some well known islands of the Dodecanese and hard to say but is mostly a political problem. If a Greek ministry deside to extend the airport that is all. But go figer out who is going to do that.
